Genetic variation of fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2) may contribute to the high prevalence of obesity and Type II diabetes in Tonga.

Studied 1022 subjects recruited from the 1998 and 2000 Tonga Type II Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Prevalence Survey conducted by the Diabetes Centres Vaiola Hospital, Tonga, and the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney.

The author uses terminology associated with medical professions. He assumes the audience already knows the specific terminology about his subject

Weight, height, and BMI was measured
            Fasting blood was collected and separated within 20 min of venesection.
Used statistics to assess the data.

The authors didn’t use any other sources to refer to.

The connections my project and this source share is the subject of obesity and the search for reasons for the prevalence of obesity in Tonga. The information found in this source is not very applicable to my project. I am learning more towards the overall reason for obesity in Tonga. Mine is more general than super specific.

Since World War ll the rate of modernization in Pacific populations has increased dramatically, bringing changes in lifestyle that have precipitated an epidemic of obesity and increases in the prevalence and incidence of associated non-communicable diseases, particularly non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

  1. What evidence does the author provide to support his or her main argument? How is the author attempting to logically prove his or her thesis and how does this affect the organization of the document?
Used charts on obesity prevalence in pacific islands.
Used comparative studies on rural-urban and migrant communities.
Studied secular trends, levels of physical activity, and traditional diets in pacific islands.

The audience seems to be pretty general but geared more toward people with a background knowledge about obesity. The audience could also be anyone interested in obesity and the pacific Islands.

Studied cultural and socioeconomic factors associated with obesity in the Pacific islands.
            Observed the ages obesity was most prevalent in the society.
            Compared obesity to other applicable items in the pacific island societies.

These authors use their own research to write this article. They don’t use any other sources to refer to.

This source and my project have many connections. They are both about obesity even though the source is more about the prevalence of obesity in the pacific islands it still give me good ideas of risk factors associated with obesity.

This article is about the journey of two Tongan boys who lost a lot of weight on the biggest loser. They wanted to go back to Tonga and teach others what they learned to inspire them to want to make a change in their lives. This article is helpful to me because it talks about why Tongans are obese from a natives point of view and why most Tongans don’t change their habits.

This article goes into the many causes of obesity and reasons why obesity is a big problem in the Pacific Islands. This article is helpful to me because it gives me ideas of things to look for and consider when I do my project. It also gives me some background to help me study causes specific to Tonga.

I can use this article to learn more about the food that Tongan’s eat and why that contributes to the obesity issue. It might also give me more information on health problems associated with obesity in Tonga.

This article is written by a BBC writer that was sent to Tonga to see if all really was well in paradise. It is the story of his experiences with the obesity problem. I can use this article to get an outsiders opinion and perspective on the obesity problem. It might provide a less biased view on the situation.
